How Many IPv4 Addresses Are There?

There are 4,294,967,296 IPv4 addresses because IPv4 is a 32-bit address space. That means it has 232 addresses.

  • There are about 4.3 billion IPv4 addresses in total but about 600 million are not available for regular internet use.
  • About 3.5 million IPv4 addresses were still available for allocation in September 2024 – about one thousandth of the total.
  • The IPv4 transfer market sees millions of IPv4 addresses change hands every year.

Not all of those addresses are available for regular internet users. Almost 600 million IPv4 addresses are reserved for special purposes, like private use and multicast. That means just 3.7 billion IPv4 addresses can be used for ordinary internet communication.

About 3.5 million of the 3.7 billion usable addresses are awaiting allocation. That’s about one thousandth of the total space. Those addresses are only available to new organizations in limited amounts, to ensure new participants can get some address space for the price of membership, which is typically lower than prices on the transfer market.
