What is LACNIC?

LACNIC is the Regional Internet Registry serving Latin America and parts of the Caribbean.
It issues and registers IPv4 addresses, IPv6 addresses, and AS Numbers to organizations operating networks in its service region. It was founded in 1999 and obtained formal recognition as an RIR in 2002. It is headquartered in Uruguay.
- LACNIC was established in 1999 and recognized by ICANN in 2002. It serves countries in Latin America and parts of the Caribbean from Uruguay.
- LACNIC’s principal language is Spanish. But it makes all its services available in English and Portuguese, too.
Brazil and Mexico both have National Internet Registries (NIRs). Brazil’s provides service in Portuguese and they both provide registry services in the local currency.

LACNIC policy supports the transfer of IP addresses within its region and between regions. This means IP addresses can come into and leave the LACNIC region. Its policy also allows some IP addresses to be leased. But leasing out addresses does not count towards justification required when getting more IP addresses, even through the market.
