What is RIPE NCC?

The RIPE NCC is the Regional Internet Registry serving Europe and the surrounding areas.
It issues and registers IPv4 addresses, IPv6 addresses, and AS Numbers to organizations operating networks in its service region. It was established in 1992 and is headquartered in the Netherlands.
- The RIPE NCC was established in Amsterdam in 1992. Until 1997, it was an activity of the European academic networking organization, RARE, which is now GÉANT.
- The RIPE NCC serves countries in Europe, the Middle East and parts of Central Asia from the Netherlands, with a branch office in Dubai.
- The RIPE community is not a legally registered organization. It sets the policies that the RIPE NCC implements
RIPE policy supports the transfer of IP addresses within its region and between regions. This means IP addresses can come into and leave the RIPE region. No needs assessment is required for transfers within the region. A needs assessment is performed for inter-RIR transfers when required by policy in other regions.
RIPE recognizes the Legacy status of IPv4 addresses issued before it was formed. It will recognize the legacy status of IPv4 addresses transferred into its region. RIPE policy explicitly allows for temporary transfers, also known as leasing.
