What is ARIN?

ARIN is the Regional Internet Registry serving North America and parts of the Caribbean.
It issues and registers IPv4 addresses, IPv6 addresses, and AS Numbers to organizations operating networks in its service region. It was established in 1997, taking over from the central registry that had previously served networks in regions without an RIR.
- ARIN was established in Virginia in 1997 and serves countries in North America and parts of the Caribbean from the USA.
- ARIN inherited the central registry that predated the RIR system. That is why it is listed as the administrator for 59 legacy /8s in the IANA IPv4 Address Space Registry.
ARIN policy supports the transfer of IP addresses within its region and between regions. This means IP addresses can come into and leave the ARIN region.
ARIN policy allows IP addresses to be leased. But leasing out addresses does not count towards justification required when getting more IP addresses, even through the market. This policy is intended to reduce speculation.
