What is APNIC?

APNIC is the Regional Internet Registry serving the Asia-Pacific.

It issues and registers IPv4 addresses, IPv6 addresses, and AS Numbers to organizations operating networks in its service region. It was established in 1993 and is headquartered in Australia.

  • APNIC was established in Japan in 1993. It moved to Australia when it was new to lower its cost base. It has been based in Australia for decades.
  • APNIC does not have any legacy IPv4 addresses in its registry. It recently ended their special status so it could offer RPKI services to all networks registered in its database.

There are seven National Internet Registries (NIRs) serving countries in the APNIC region. NIRs provide registry services in the local language and currency. Some countries require networks operating in their country to use the NIR.

APNIC policy supports the transfer of IP addresses within its region and between regions. This means IP addresses can come into and leave the APNIC region.

APNIC no longer has any Legacy IPv4 addresses in its region. It is not possible to lease IP addresses registered in the APNIC region.
